If you plan to get dental implants, you may be eager to start treatment. That’s only fair – anyone with missing teeth would want the “ultimate tooth replacements.” Still, you’ll need to know how to prepare for dental implant surgery first. Lacking this knowledge would lead to problems with your new teeth. All that said, your Annandale dentist can share the relevant facts with you. Here are four key things you should do before your implant treatment.

Ask Your Questions

At your consultation visit, you’ll get a chance to learn more about implant treatment. Use that time to ask any questions you still have concerning the surgery.

You see, being well-informed before surgery helps things go smoothly. You can make any needed adjustments, ease your dental anxiety, etc. Also, the discussion ensures that you and your dentist are on the same page. You wouldn’t want any misconceptions to affect your treatment results.

Follow Pre-Op Instructions

Whatever your concerns, the dentist will share pre-op instructions with you. Make sure to follow this guidance – it’ll keep you safe during your procedure.

Dental implant pre-op rules are pretty simple. For instance, you’ll want to fast the night before surgery if it’ll include IV sedation. You could also be told to take any prescribed antibiotics. Based on the treatment’s time of day, you may even need to rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash.

Have a Driver Ready

Even if you’d prefer to, you can’t drive home from an implant surgery. That means you should arrange for a friend or family member to take you home after treatment.

The issue is that implant surgery involves anesthesia (if not sedation). Given that fact, you’ll feel sleepy and disoriented after it’s over. You just won’t be in the right mindset to drive a car. Instead, it’d be better to have a driver pick you up. They’ll make sure you’re ready to go once your care is done.

Clear Out Your Schedule

You’ll need time to adjust and heal in the days after implant work. Give yourself that leeway by clearing a few days of your post-surgery schedule.

Your mouth will be fairly sensitive after treatment. In fact, you’ll likely suffer some post-surgery soreness and swelling. Time away from work would help you work through these symptoms. Similarly, you may want help around the house. Friends or family could offer support with childcare or meals.

Once you grasp these four ideas, you’ll know how to prepare for dental implant surgery. Make sure to memorize them and similar tips before treatment day!
